Bird's nest fungi

These are bird’s nest fungi (probably a Cyathus species), which like to grow on wood.  They look like they have tiny eggs inside their cups.  They start out as little goblet shapes, then open up to reveal the “eggs” when the rains start.  Raindrops falling into the cup splash the “eggs” out some distance away from the nest.  If ( Read more... )

What I Saw Today: Zeppelin

I saw our local zeppelin today, from the corner of Villa and Shoreline. It circled a couple of times as it rose from its base at Moffett Field, then it headed east out of sight.

What I Saw Today

Today D. and I saw two tiny mouse femur bones and a tiny rib in some coyote scat on the Yerba Buena Trail, heading toward McCreery Lake at Grant Park.

What I Saw TodayToday, in between chilly rain showers, D. and I took a short walk through the neighborhood and saw the avocado tree on W. Today I saw a brilliant red sweet gum leaf float along the length of my street in the gutter after rainfall, eventually coming to rest against its brethren already gathered together in a clump at the edge of a storm drain.
